How It Works

Our streamlined 5-step process makes it easy to implement comprehensive coastal monitoring solutions

Step
1

Install Cameras

Connect to Surfline's 1,400-camera network or let us install dedicated private cameras for you.

Step
2

Camera Auto Configures

Using detected parameters the camera rectifies and auto-prepares to measure and map.

Step
3

Video Data to Cloud

Video and derived data are streamed in near-real time to our secure cloud storage.

Step
4

Digest Data and Video

Clients analyze video and data using our secure dashboard or integrate it via API.

Step
5

Camera Management

Surfline handles all camera maintenance and repairs.

Our Computer Vision Algorithm

Custom Machine
Learning

Powered by patent protected processes and leveraging a custom network trained on an extensive archive of coastal imagery, Surfline Coastal Intelligence returns significantly better detection results in the ocean environment than a 'best in class' generic object detection model.

Machine Learning

Scene Segmentation

Our model understands a wide variety of coastal features at the pixel level, including waves (whitewater, unbroken face, plunging lip, spray), beach, crowds, and objects. This allows for detailed data to be derived on any aspect of the surf zone environment.

Full Beach Reconstruction

Wide Area Coverage

Combining computer vision designed for small object detection with a PTZ camera, we can generate full attendance monitoring from a single camera location. We can fully reconstruct the scene and map position.

Configuration and Setup

Self Configuring

Our camera system requires minimal setup and configuration. With cameras capable of mounting almost anywhere there's connectivity, our software automatically reconfigures in the event a camera moves intentionally or inadvertently.

Intellectual Property

Patent Protected Technology

We have broad patent protection in Australia and the United States for our approach to deriving recreational and environmental data in the surf zone and other water environments, with similar patents pending in Europe.

Handling Poor Lighting

Anomaly Detection

Risk models and long term analysis are highly vulnerable to false negative detections. If the camera is obscured by fog, rain, dirt or obstruction our model detects that and flags the data as unreliable.

Managing Occlusion

Robust Error Correction

Our system deals with occlusion (people obscured by waves or each other) with a data led statistical averaging through time coupled with high frame rate analysis.
